Surround Yourself With People Who Make You Smile

healthy friendships

Despite having a tough time at school with girls being bullies for no reason, I actually feel like I did rather well on the healthy friendships front. I have two incredible groups of friends who are my rocks and I feel like they make me a better person. As well as those people I have a sprinkling of friends who I’ve met throughout work life, my family, Rob and some amazing people I’ve met through the blog who I can call my genuine friends.

I feel like I’m a lucky one, but that’s not always the case. Sometimes without even knowing it, the people you surround yourself with are the ones bringing you down and that’s not cool. Seeing these people shouldn’t feel like a chore, it should be easy and you should enrich each others lives.

Self-Acceptance + Good People

We all talk so much about inner happiness and wellbeing, which yes, is the most important thing when it comes to finding peace and acceptance within yourself, but of course you’ll never reach that if you’re around people or a person who brings you down. That could be a friend, boyfriend, family member or you could actually be thinking “I like all my pals Cat, so you can stop right there!”. Either way, maybe it’s time to have a little think about how all of the people in your life make you feel and what you offer each other. Even if you’re thinking the latter, maybe think about your pals and send them a message saying how wonderful they are.

I’m not saying to cut ties with your best friend or boyfriend just because you’ve had a little row – that’s life and we get over things life that – it’s more a case of thinking back and wondering how much you smile when you’re with that person, how much do you laugh, do you get excited about the future, or do you always talk about the past, do you talk about other people all the time or do you talk about your own lives and create new, exciting ideas? And if you realise that the effect of the relationship is actually a negative one, then maybe it’s time to step back a little and have a bit of space for a while.

Every relationship you have will be different and you’ll get different things from people, but ultimately you need to think “Am I happy when I’m around this person?”. If the answer is yes, then cherish every moment with them, tell them they’re awesome and give them a big squeeze. If not, then like I said, maybe take a step away and see how you feel.

When The Words Just Flow

Writing a blog sometimes is so weird because there are times when I’m like “oh gosh, what shall I write about today” and then times like this morning when I just get up walk to my laptop, inspired to start typing like a zombie. I’ll probably read this back in a moment and not have a clue what I’m on about, but I’ll leave it exactly how it is, raw thoughts.

I spent the day with the amazing Carly Rowena yesterday (someone who makes me smile, laugh and feel good about myself) and we were talking about the blogging world and our friends from school etc. It just made me think how much I love all the people in my life and how lucky I am to have them.

To my peoples, you know who you are, I love you! 😉 And to all of the people who I haven’t yet met, but may become true friends in the future, I’m excited to meet you!

Love, Cat x

I really enjoyed this post. I have struggled with friendships all my life. I went to an all girls school where I did not really fit in. Any friends I did have were lost when I was battling an eating disorder. Now having moved away from my family I hope to find some amazing new friends. I have my husband but sometimes other friendships are just as important so I hope in time I am able to leanrn how to trust and form strong friendships x

      Hey Jenny,
Thank you for such an honest comment. I can definitely relate to losing friendships whilst going through an eating disorder. By the sounds of it and the fact that you can so openly talk, I can tell that any friend would be lucky to have you. Here’s to your future friendships.
      :) xx
